My Bahamas Trip

My Bahamas vacation last week was fantastic. It was the most relaxing yet fun packed vacation I have ever had. We were a little nervous about the weather as Hurricane Ike was originally headed for our destination. Luckily for us, he changed directions and we ended up just having some wind. It all started Monday 09/08 when we arrived there at noon. The Sandals resort we stayed at upgraded our room to a concierge room and greeted us with Champagne. We were able to enjoy a buffet luncheon at the Spices restaurant. We even went swimming and of course drank at the swim up bars. The drinks there were so strong and it didn’t take much to get us lazy. We took a quick nap as we had been up since 2:00 AM. We almost slept through dinner time but luckily were able to catch dinner at Casanova. They had a Junkanoo Band walk around playing. The costumes they wore were very colorful. We headed to the Piano Bar where Heston entertained us with his excellent playing abilities and fun personality. He referred to Ken and me as “The Virginias”. We sang along with his songs and before we knew it, it was midnight.

Day 2 – Breakfast started at the Spices buffet. They had so many different choices that you could have something almost every day of the week. While at breakfast, Samantha came to visit our table and started talking to us about this and that. She found out that Ken and I have been together for 6 years and started giving him a difficult time about “what u waiting for?” After breakfast, we went to the pool and caught some rays and swam and drank and we even played some pool volleyball! Our team lost but we had a great time. They had activities going on throughout the day to get the guests involved. It was great. Ken caught a few too many rays and got a little sunburned. We traveled to the downtown area on the main bus. It cost $1 per person each way. It seemed to be the cheapest transportation around. Downtown we visited the Straw Market. For those of you that haven’t experienced it, it is a trip. All of the vendors are trying to sell you THEIR product and they try to wheel and deal with you. We ate dinner at the Crystal Room. The food was excellent! That night the entertainment was Hot Latin Nights. They had some Latin dancers perform and then get the crowd going. Ken was up on stage shaking his bootie. Woohoo! Shake it baby!

Day 3 – Breakfast was again at the Spices buffet. We took the boat over to the Sandals Cay (pronounced Key). They had a pool with a swim up bar and a whirlpool there along with plenty of seating/lounge chairs for the guests. On the opposite side of the island, they had more lounge chairs so you could sit on the beach. Ken and I took our snorkeling gear over there and went snorkeling. The water was so calm and we were able to see some interesting fish along with some sea urchins. Ken said to stay away from them as they hurt. We were able to hold hands as we snorkeled. We even snorkeled over to another island that happened to be a little rocky. Of course, 2 seconds after Ken tells me to be careful, I slipped on the rocks and scrapped my behind. It wasn’t bad though. We ate lunch at the restaurant called Goombay over on the island. The rest of the afternoon was spent exploring the island and relaxing at the pool. Before dinner, we went to the pool area and enjoyed a local singer that performed romantic love songs. Ken and I danced on the Terrace. That night, Ken had arranged for us to have a romantic dinner for 2 on the beach. It was a little windy and dinner ended up being on the pier. The table looked great with the flowers and candles however, the butler had a hard time keeping the candles lit. It ended up being pretty dark and our source of light was the almost full moon. After dinner, Ken asked me to walk to the end of the pier with him. Once we got there, he told me he had a question to ask me and then he proposed. And yes….. I said “Of course”?!!!! He told me he was scared to ask me over dinner as since it was so dark, he didn’t want to drop the ring down between the slats of the pier. It was so romantic.

Day 4 – Breakfast at… yep, you guessed it… Spices! We told Samantha about our engagement and she screamed and was so happy for us. She ran out and grabbed some flowers and came back to our table and started singing Congratulations to us. She kept hugging us. Ken and I then went for a kayak ride and that was very relaxing. We caught the 12:00 snorkeling trip and while out there saw both jellyfish and a stingray. There were so many fish there to see. It was awesome. We ate lunch at the Royal Café Grill and then headed to Atlantis on Paradise Island via the lovely cheap bus service. Once we got to the water taxi there was a taxi driver that told us that no more water taxi’s were running today because it was too slow and that he could take us there for $10.00. The water taxi was $3.00 per person. Well, then another guy calls us over and tells us that the taxi driver is lying to us and that they have a water taxi heading over in about 20 minutes. Well, the taxi driver didn’t like that so they started a huge argument. They were calling each other many names. After our quick tour of Atlantis we went to take the water taxi back to catch the bus and an old guy told us to “chill” as we were hoping to catch one at 6:00. No one there is in a hurry unless you are a tourist trying to catch the last bus back to the resort at 6:30. ha ha Luckily (again) we made it back in time. We had dinner at the Baccarrat restaurant. I tried duck and veal. We made our way back to the piano bar after dinner where again, Heston entertained us. I told him that since it was 9/11 in the states that a great song would be “What the world needs now”. Not too many people knew it so I ended up singing a solo. How embarrassing. Brittney had baby Jamielyn and I became a nana again!!!

Day 5 – Breakfast at Spices! Played beach volleyball and swam and relaxed catching some sun. Ken and I took a sailboat out for a ride. First time for both of us. Captain Agee did an excellent job in guiding us in our journey. We ate lunch at the Royal Café Grill and then prepared to go on our sunset sail. The Flying Cloud was a 50’ catamaran and the sail was awesome. It took us up around Paradise Island and by some other really cool Cay’s/Islands. We learned that in order to be considered a Cay, that it had to be at least 1 mile and have vegetation on it…otherwise it was considered a rock. The Bahamas consists of 700 islands and cays. After the wonderful sunset cruise, we went back to the resort and listened to the jazz band that was performing.

Day 6 – Departure Day. L We packed up and then headed over to the Sandals Cay to take some pictures and then headed to the mini straw market for some souvenirs. The majestic tour driver that took us back to the airport gave us a quiz about our Bahamian knowledge and we ended up with over a trillion points. Ha ha We was very entertaining.

That concludes our wonderful relaxing vacation. It has taken me about a week to recover and still haven’t gotten back into the groove of things. I want to give a special thanks to Ken who made my trip the best ever. I love you, honey!
